Writing content can be one of the toughest parts of building a great website. With nine million users asking us for advice on small business websites, we’ve gotten to learn a few tricks of the trade that will help you write great content for your website.
Try everything
First, get in the habit of writing down ideas, and turn those ideas into great content for your website or blog. No idea is a bad one. (Unless you own a personal trainer website, and your blog posts are about how to grow bougainvillea. This may not be the right demographic for your great content.)
Use your blog as a testing platform for your website content. If it’s a hit on the blog, re-write it slightly, add more keywords and put it as another page on your website. Eventually, you’ll have plenty of targeted keywords on your website pages that will help you rank higher for search engines and even write better.
Don’t limit yourself and the possibilities will be endless.
If you’re using the free Yola for your website, you may need to upgrade to our Bronze package in order to have unlimited pages on your website.
Think outside of the sentence
Words are great. In fact, they make the Internet work. Another way to add your keywords without writing 1,000 words is to use images. See where I’m going here?
Great content for your website can be in the form of video, images, animated GIFs, etc. Think creatively and use other forms of content to grow your following. These types of posts are also great for your social media calendar. Keep it simple and you’ll be adding a storm of content in no time.
Also, don’t forget to add alternative text to all your images and videos.
Master the interview
The best way to learn about your audience is to ask them questions. In fact, pick a few core questions that will help you to better understand the people who are new to your small business website. Ask friends, ask your children, ask your readers. You can very easily put together a survey using Wufoo or the Yola contact form to email your customers.
The ripple effect of asking questions is that you’ll also get ideas for blog posts and great website content. It starts with a conversation. Be honest and try to navigate around your immense knowledge of your industry to let others, preferably ones who purchase, speak to you about their needs. This will help you discover ways to speak to your readers and offer them some great content on your website.
