New Look, Better Interaction, and New Widgets!

This is kind of a long post, but that’s because we’ve had a pretty big release. Based on your feedback, we’ve made some significant changes to the Sitebuilder to enhance your free website. We’ve added a few new widgets, and have updated our existing widgets to help make creating a website even easier, quicker, and more fun. Here’s what you’ll see:

WIDGET INTERACTION

Easy-to-find widgets

  • The widget icons are bigger; no more squinting.
  • We’ve reorganized the widget categories to make widgets easier to find. The new categories are:
    • Basic – The most commonly used widgets
    • Multimedia – For all your photo, video and music needs
    • Widget Collections – Collections of widgets offered by other companies
    • Community – Social features like chat rooms, forums, or translators
    • Forms & Appointments – Easy-to-add forms and appointment schedulers
    • Maps – Show your location on a map
    • Ecommerce – Sell products from your online store

Better widget explanations

  • Roll your mouse cursor over a widget icon and you’ll see a tooltip with a short description of the widget. This way, you can see what it does before dropping it onto your site.

More accurate drag-and-drop

  • When you’re dragging a widget into your site, our improved drop zone shows exactly where your widget will appear on the page.

NEW WIDGETS

  • Forms: Our new form widget allows you to add a “contact us” or custom form to your site. You can change almost anything in the form. Add radio buttons, specify default values, create a message that visitors see upon submitting a form, and more. Our form widget is flexible so you can get exactly the information you need from your visitors.
  • MP3 Player: Want users to hear music on your site? Now they can. This MP3 player drops right onto your page.
  • Google Translate: In this global economy, you can have visitors from Albania to Zambia and everywhere in between. With the Google Translate widget, your visitors can view your site in their language. Of course, it’s not quite a perfect translation, but it’ll get the message across.

We’re always looking for ways to make it easier for you to make a website. We love hearing what you have to say through Community Forum, Get Satisfaction, or from user research. Thanks, and keep your comments coming!

  1. I really like the look of the new sidebar and the new feautures added, but sitebuilder doesn’t seem to be working since this was added. Now, everytime I look at preview of the page I’m making, sitebuilder freezes up and won’t let me save/publish the page. In addition, the preview does not show what the website will look like the way it is currently set up, it ignores my recent edits.

  2. I was highly disappointed when I found out that my web site was not available to someone calling me and trying to pull up the site merely by typing jrshandymanservice@yolasite.com. I was unaware that it was unavailable with simplicity. As a matter of fact, I could not bring it up myself without logging into yola. I might not be using the right tactic to pull it up, hopefully, but now I know why I haven’t recieved any phone calls from the advertising. To that end, anyone with suggestions? 3. I like the new look, especially the bigger drop zone, as i have had problems with the old one before. No problems w/ the new yola, though, except for one: Where’s formassembly? My whole product ordering process is based on that. I know i can still embed forms, but what was the use of taking that widget out?

  4. The new stuff is great but i got one big complaint!!!!!! I use to use wiget box all the time now its got widget gallery that doesent let me put up my custom made widgets!!!! Yola u have ruiend my whole site!!!!!!!!!

  5. I have noticed that other site building programs allow you to see how many people have viewed your site over a perioad of time. Does anybody know if this is the case with Yola?
How can I figure out how to do this?

  6. The new mp3 widget is great but is there a way to use the mp3 player without the name of the file appearing below the player? This is not typically how web based audio players appear on web pages. To remove the file name from appearing below the player I have tried to edit the mp3 player using the HTML widget but it will not let me see the code. Any suggestions are appreciated.

  7. Jonathan you can edit the code by doing the following ( long winded, but it’s possible ). Add the widget as normal to your page. Then add a text widget, and copy and paste the player into that. Then view the text section in html code mode, and the code is there. Make your adjustments, then view the finished player in the text widget, and copy and paste it where you want to on your page. I actually like the filename under the player – and don’t forget you can always change this filename before uploading the mp3 file to your site. Hope this helps?
Just for the record I love all the new widgets. Yola is brilliant!
